Toronto Celebrates Newcomer Day at Nathan Phillips Square

On May 29, the City of Toronto hosted its 12th annual Toronto Newcomer Day, with celebrations, live performances, and community activities at Nathan Phillips Square and Toronto City Hall.

The event created a warm and welcoming atmosphere for newcomers and residents alike. Visitors had the opportunity to learn about services available to newcomers and to experience Toronto’s rich cultural diversity.

People in attendance enjoyed cultural performances, activities for all ages, a food fair, a marketplace, and more than 100 information booths with representatives from local organizations.

Toronto was one of the first municipalities in Canada to create a Newcomer Day in 2015. Since then, the annual event has welcomed more than 75,000 people.

Mayor Olivia Chow proclaimed May 29 as Newcomer Day and attended the celebration alongside Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik, Councillor for Spadina–Fort York.

“The City of Toronto welcomes people from all over the world, and Toronto Newcomer Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate the contributions of newcomers to a stronger, safer, more beautiful city and share information about services, programs and community partners that will help newcomers build new lives here,” said Mayor Olivia Chow.

Toronto is home to more than three million people and is one of the world’s most diverse and livable cities. Newcomer Day is a meaningful way to welcome everyone who has chosen to make Toronto their home.
