Pope Leo XIV blessed the completed Tower of Jesus Christ at the Basilica of the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, marking one of the most symbolic moments in the long history of Antoni Gaudí’s masterpiece.
The ceremony took place on June 10, 2026, the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death. The blessing followed a solemn Mass commemorating the architect, whose vision shaped one of the most recognizable churches in the world.
The Tower of Jesus Christ is the central and tallest tower of the basilica. It reaches 172.5 meters, making Sagrada Família the tallest church in the world. The tower is intentionally lower than Montjuïc hill in Barcelona, reflecting Gaudí’s belief that human work should not rise above God’s creation.
Construction of Sagrada Família began in 1882. Gaudí dedicated much of his life to the project and transformed it into a unique combination of architecture, faith, symbolism, and natural forms. Although the basilica has now reached its full height, some decorative work and parts of the complex still remain unfinished.
The event also renewed attention to Gaudí’s spiritual legacy. Often called “God’s architect,” Gaudí created Sagrada Família as a “Bible in stone,” using architecture to express the Christian faith through light, geometry, sculpture, and sacred symbolism.
Pope Leo XIV’s blessing of the Tower of Jesus Christ marked not only an architectural milestone, but also a powerful tribute to Gaudí’s vision, one hundred years after his death.
