Polonez News Canada commemorates Dr. August Franz Globensky, born August Franciszek Głąbiński, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the historic year 1776.
Globensky is remembered as one of the earliest Polish-born military figures connected with the history of Canada. According to the organizers of the commemoration, he is recognized as “The Very First Polish Soldier in Canada.”
He served as a surgeon with a British auxiliary regiment during the American Revolutionary War. His story represents an important early connection between Poland and North America, long before the major waves of Polish immigration to Canada in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The year 2026 marks 250 years since 1776 and provides an opportunity to remember the individuals whose lives connected Europe, British North America and the emerging United States during a period of major historical change.
The official commemoration has been proclaimed by Marek Jozef D. Goldyn, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Polonez News Canada, together with the editorial staff, including Stanislaw Skrzeszewski and Prof. Martin Janta Polczynski.
The initiative is held under the auspices of the European Club of Canada and the Goldyn Diplomatic Academy of Canada, with reference to the historical traditions of the Polish Army Veterans’ Association in America.
The commemoration also emphasizes the historical connections between Canada, Poland, France and the United States, and the contribution of Polish soldiers, physicians, veterans and immigrants to the history of North America.
For the Polish community in Canada, the story of August Franz Globensky is a reminder that Polish-Canadian history reaches back much further than many people realize.
