Poland Becomes the EU's Sixth-Largest Economy

Poland has climbed to become the sixth-largest economy in the European Union, overtaking Belgium and Switzerland in EU rankings as its GDP surpassed €920 billion in 2026, according to figures reported in early August.

The milestone caps two decades of rapid growth since Poland joined the EU in 2004. Its share of global GDP has risen by nearly half over that period, even as the broader EU has lost ground relative to fast-growing economies in Asia. Poland's nominal GDP has now exceeded USD 1 trillion, driven largely by exports to Germany and other EU markets, along with sustained foreign investment and integration into European supply chains.

Analysts note the ranking varies depending on the measure used. Within the EU, Poland now sits ahead of both Belgium and Switzerland (which, while not an EU member, is frequently included in European economic comparisons). On a global basis, the International Monetary Fund's April 2026 World Economic Outlook still places Switzerland's economy slightly ahead of Poland's, with Poland projected to overtake it worldwide by 2028.

Either way, the trend line is clear: Poland has gone from an economy roughly a quarter the size of Germany's in 1990 to one where the gap has narrowed to less than fivefold today — the smallest gap in the country's modern history. For the Polish diaspora in Canada, the news underscores Poland's growing weight as an economic partner, one that Canadian governments and businesses, including Export Development Canada, are increasingly looking to engage.
