On October 19, voters in Alberta will decide whether to hold a referendum on leaving Canada. Demand for mail-in ballots was so high that Elections Alberta moved up its deadline, while more than 3,000 ballots were rejected over errors in the packages.
Premier Danielle Smith says she will vote to stay in Canada. A recent poll put support for separation at about 22 percent. Weeks before the vote, Ottawa named the Pacific Link pipeline to the West Coast a project of national interest.
